Obituary of Helen Hurkes

Helen Hurkes, 88 years of age, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on the morning of Friday, October 14^th, 2022, in Greeley, Colorado. She was born on January 15^th, 1934, to (John) Elmer Stein and Barbara Thrun in Coddington County, Watertown, South Dakota.

Helen grew up in Watertown, SD on the family farm. She graduated from high school in 1952. A few years later, on May 28^th, 1956, Helen married Alfred Anthony Hurkes in Waverly, SD. 

Helen was a homemaker who took great care of her family. In her spare time, she loved to oil paint or draw. She also had a green thumb and took great pleasure in tending to her plants. Most of all, Helen cherished the moments she spent with her family.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Parish and The Annunciation Catholic Church in Leadville.

She is survived by her children; David Hurkes of Arizona, Deb List of Colorado Springs, Diane Eussen and her husband James of Greeley, Dorene East and her husband JJ of Johnstown, and Dustin Hurkes of Leadville, her grandchildren; Michael, Craig, Christopher, Brittany, Sarah, Andrew, Sami and Makenna, and 6 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Al Hurkes, her son Dana, her parents John Elmer Stein and Barbara Stein, and her brother Paul.

A Recitation of the Rosary will take place followed by a Life Celebration at 11:00 a.m. October 26, 2022 at Adamson Life Celebration Home.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Bristol Hospice in care of Adamson Life Celebration Home, 2000 W 47^th Ave., Greeley, CO 80634.
