Obituary of Gwendolyn "Gwen" Frances Quick
Gwendolyn Frances Quick died peacefully at UC Hospital, Greeley, CO on May 8, 2023. She was 94 years old. Gwen was born on May 17, 1928 in McCook, Nebraska to Archibald Drake and Nora (Swanson) Drake. She grew up on a farm in a close-knit family where her cousins were her closest friends. When she was in the eighth grade, her family moved to town. Gwen began working at the Rexall drugstore when she was a senior in high school, and she continued working there after she graduated from McCook High School in 1945. In 1947, Robert Quick walked into the drugstore and asked Gwen to go on a date with him. The couple became engaged that summer and married on August 12, 1948. They had five children, Ray (1950), Ron (1951), Shirlee (1954) Susan (1955) and Roger (1956). Gwen and Bob moved back to the Drake farm in 1950, and eventually took over farming his parent’s property as well. But the Bureau of Reclamation decided to put in a dam that divided their farms in half and took all the pasture on the place where they lived, which made farming uneconomical. Consequently, Bob and Gwen made the surprising and daring decision to give up farming, leave Nebraska and move to Ft. Morgan, Colorado, where they had purchased a motel. After five years, Bob and Gwen sold the motel and moved to Greeley, Colorado in 1966, where they opened a clothing store in January 1967 called the Style Corral in Hillside Shopping Center and later, a small home décor shop called Accents, Ltd., which also hosted a contract post office. After eight successful years, they closed the Style Corral and in 1977, they purchased Poulsen Hardware Store in Eaton, Colorado, which was a perfect fit for them, in a community very similar to the one in which they grew up in Nebraska.
Throughout the years, Bob and Gwen indulged their love of travel, often to visit their children in the United States and abroad. Closer to home, Bob and Gwen built a cabin near Buckhorn Canyon that became a weekend retreat for the whole family, where we cherish memories of countless meals, miles of walks, and non-stop card games. Gwen was a life-long reader, fabulous gardener, especially with her beautiful roses, and a champion pie-baker. She welcomed a constant stream of children, grandchildren and extended family members to her home.
Gwen is survived by her children, Ray Quick and wife, Philana (Karakusis ) Quick, Ron Quick and wife, Elizabeth (Sarsfield) Quick, Shirlee Quick, Susan (Quick) Cearley and husband, James Cearley, and Roger Quick and wife, Susan (Brunner) Quick. She was a beloved grandmother to Brian Quick, Rob Quick, Carolyn Quick and partner, Nathanael Herrera, Edward Quick, Erika (Cearley) Kingrey, and Nicholas Cearley. Her seven great-grandchildren include Elton Quick, Samuel Quick, Sarah Quick, Randee Quick, Nathan Quick, Sophia Herrera, and Natalie Herrera. Gwen is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Quick, her brother, Galen Drake, and her grandson, Nathan Quick.
