On September 18, 1976 he married Shirley Ann Kaser at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Greeley, celebrating 47 years.  They enjoyed downhill skiing and travelling the world together and were active with the Boy Scouts through the church.

In his retirement, Dr. Mangum became more active with fly-fishing, tying his own flies, woodworking, tennis, and enjoying their mountain home in Glacier View.  He wrote his life story, publishing and sharing copies with his family.  He enjoyed playing the guitar, reading Navajo mysteries and especially being a grandpa and sharing his life experiences with his grandchildren.  He developed the Medical Archives Department at NCMC, creating displays with historic materials and devices.
